Building connections

Traumatic experiences, such as the examples listed in this ACEs questionnaire, disrupt connections. Toxic stress also disrupts connections. When human connections are disrupted or absent, we tend to view ourselves, others, and the world around us through a distorted lens— one of mistrust, fear, and even shame.  It can be difficult to build or reestablish connections with a child who has lived life for any period of time looking through this distorted lens.  They may ignore, rebuff, or respond aggressively or despairingly to our attempts to build relationships with them.  Regardless, we must remain resolute in our attempts to make continuous, positive bids for connection.  Connections foster resilience.
