Cracked Up is an incredible documentary depicting the adverse effects of childhood trauma through the life of Darell Hammond. The film offers insight into how childhood trauma follows us into adulthood and how we can transform stigma and shame into healing and hope. Available on Netflix or through the official website.

Wrestling Ghosts intimately documents the two-year journey of a young woman coping with motherhood on top of her own childhood trauma. The film deals with the lasting effects of trauma on both the survivor and their children and offers hope for healing. Available through the official website.

Broken Places mixes “longitudinal narratives [of people with adverse childhood experiences] with commentary from nationally renowned experts in neurobiology and early childhood development in order to illuminate the devastating impact of childhood adversity as well as the factors that can foster resilience.” Available through the official website.

BOOKS

There are countless books available on the subject of trauma.  Here are my current favorites.

The Body Keeps the Score — This is basically my “trauma bible.” It has been instrumental in both my personal and professional journeys.

The Boy Who Was Raised As a Dog — Through his own case studies, Dr. Perry brings to life the trauma/child brain connection and how connection, consistency, and relationship can build hope and foster resilience.

The Deepest Well — Dr. Harris originally inspired me to begin speaking in schools about childhood trauma. She is now California’s newly elected, first ever Surgeon General and has named childhood trauma America’s #1 public health crisis.

Waking The Tiger — The creator of somatic experiencing alternative therapy for PTSD demonstrates how trauma can be healed through the senses.

In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts — Addiction expert Dr. Gabor Mate explains addictions as rooted in childhood trauma.

Born for Love — Another book from the brilliant Dr. Perry. Here, he discusses empathy and its role and necessity for our children and our society.
